Introduction to Project Management

The Key to successful completion of project is the team skills and tools have been used for the project. In the order to understand how the Egyptian Pyramids, Great Wall of China and Manhattan has been build according to some people who argue its project. We need to understand what is project management is? What key elements of the project management framework and profession? Cost versus return benefits from these projects?

Project management is “the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities in order to meet project requirements”.

There are nine fundamental knowledge areas for project managers need to know. Four core knowledge parts; scope, time, cost, and quality those four main points would guide the project manager to specific project objectives, which required another four areas in the order to be achieved, these four areas are human resources, communication, risk, and procurement management which will feed into one more area project integration management. A successful Project manager needs to balance between the triple constraint which is, scope goals: what the project trying to accomplish, time goals: how long should it take to complete, and cost goals: what should it cost.

Project management is a necessary element in our modern business life. Observing the tremendous amount of money spending in U.S. $2.3 trillion on projects every year, and $10 trillion outside U.S. is a large cost to earn a successful projects. According to Standish group study (CHAOS) when discovered that 31% of information application projects were canceled before completion and 16.2% were successful.
In 2014 more than a million new information technology application development projects initiated comparing to 500,000 applications in 2000. How can these projects benefit the organization?

Most of the organization in the order to survive need to improve their formal project management to have better control of their financial, physical, and human resources. Also Improve customer relationship, lower organization costs, and improve firm quality. Increase reliability, and Improve productivity. That would be achieved by developing new projects. For instance Northwest Airlines developed a new reservation system called ResNet,, and many other organization improve their hardware, software, and networks through projects. Standish group (2007) showed improvement in project success, in U.S. 78,000 projects were completed successfully compared to 28,000, and 28% of information technology projects succeeded compared to 16%. Then why the improvements happened? “The reasons for the increase in successful projects vary. First, the average cost of a project has been more than cut in half. Better tools have been created to monitor and control progress and better skilled project managers with better management processes are being used. The fact that there are processes is significant in itself.”

Information technology project manager job is high demand in the market as the Project Management Institute (PMI) has grown tremendously. Project manager can earn certification as project management professional (PMP) which content of sufficient project experience, agreed to follow a code of ethics.
